What makes a braiding hair brand plant-based?
Plant-based braiding hair is defined by the type of fiber used to manufacture the hair.
Synthetic braiding hair fibers are made from plastics, which contribute to itchy scalp, traction alopecia, and uncomfortable hairstyles.
Plant-based braiding hair fibers are made from renewable sources, such as banana fiber, corn fiber, or pineapple fiber.
Even if synthetic braiding hair is advertised as clean braiding hair, eco-friendly braiding hair, or even plant-based braiding hair, if the fiber is not from a renewable resource, it is not plant-based braiding hair.
How can I tell if a braiding hair is plant-based braiding hair or not?
Acetone test: Submerge a small piece of braiding hair in acetone. If it dissolves partially or fully, it is plant-based braiding hair. If it does not dissolve at all, it is synthetic braiding hair.
Look for labels: Plant-based braiding hair packagin and product descriptions will come with labels stating that the fibers are either biodegradable or compostable.
